92nd Illinois Volunteer Mounted Infantry Home Page

Thank you for visiting!

My name is Rob. I am a descendant of a soldier in the 92nd Illinois. I invite you to contact me at info@92ndillinois.com.

Yes, for those of you who remember, I managed a similar website a few years ago. Since removing that website, I have conducted further research on this regiment. I have included it all here in this new, expanded website.

This website is devoted to the memory of one Union Civil War regiment, the 92nd Illinois Volunteer Mounted Infantry. Historian Victor Hicken, in his book, Illinois in the Civil War, (University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago, 1991, page 348) observed, “One of the finest fighting units of the entire Union army was the 92nd Illinois Infantry.”

My purpose in creating this website is two-fold:

  1. I hope to share my research on the 92nd Illinois with others who are equally as passionate about the Civil War and this regiment.
  2. I am appealing to you for information on the 92nd Illinois, so together we can expand our knowledge.

A special appeal is extended to you, the descendants of the 92nd Illinois. There were over one thousand members in this unit. There must be thousands of descendants. I invite you to share your 92nd ancestors’ photos, letters, journals, biographies and obituaries with me via email. Any relevant information you provide can then be added to this website (with your written permission via email). Hundreds of descendants and historians have already contributed information. I’d love to hear from you! And, of course, even if you aren’t a descendant, but have something to share, feel free to contact me.

(I am not asking you to send me original documents through regular mail – only scanned items you are willing to contribute via email. You keep the original documents.)

Adjutant General reports, lengthy detailed histories, company and regimental rosters, and various other listings regarding the 92nd Illinois are readily available on numerous other websites. I see no need for duplication here. Instead, I hope to focus on sacrifices, statistics and lore of this regiment – those human interest stories that made our ancestors’ wartime and post-war experiences so intriguing.

Also, feel free to contact me at the above address with any questions regarding the 92nd Illinois you might have. If I don’t know the answer, I will research your inquiry and hopefully find the answer for you.
